The Julia Morgan Legacy Event marks a special commemoration of architect Julia Morgan’s amazing accomplishments as California’s first woman architect.

The celebration kicks off with a lecture by Morgan scholar Karen McNeill, Ph.D., entitled “Julia Morgan and Phoebe Hearst: Building Legacies Together.” Dr. McNeill is preparing a biography of Julia Morgan, and has lectured extensively on her work in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her studies focus on women and gender in the architectural profession and the leadership of women in the Progressive Era.

Docent tours will take place in the Guest House from noon to 2 pm, highlighting Morgan’s work in California, including her collaboration with William Randolph Hearst to create Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Morgan left a legacy of more than 700 projects in her nearly five decades of practice. Recently awarded the AIA’s highest honor, a (posthumous) Gold Medal, her brilliant and pioneering work have only gradually won public recognition.
