On September 9, 1909 the Santa Monica Pier was officially graced with the first eager footsteps of a welcoming public. Since then, it has grown, thrived and survived to become a treasured historical landmark.
In order to give Pier visitors a more thorough understanding of the Pier's story, the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation is pleased to announce the release of "A Guide to Historic Santa Monica Pier", a brochure which guides the reader through a walking historical tour of the Pier.
The full-color, easy to read brochure takes the reader from the famous blue sign at the Pier's entrance all the way through the significant happenings and places of every corner of the Pier, and even some spots beyond.
Detailed attention is given to the Pier's oldest buildings, the Hippodrome and Billiards Buildings, as well as to its newest addition, the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. Legendary Muscle Beach, the infamous gaming ship Rex and 1973's vital "Save the Pier Forever" campaign are all brought back to life, complete with photographs to help place the reader in another time.
The brochures are the first phase of the Pier Restoration Corporation's plan to recognize and promote the Pier's history. Future plans include plaques and/or kiosks located at significant places along the Pier, providing an "It happened here" perspective for Pier visitors. Ultimately, for the Pier's centennial celebration in 2009, a small museum is planned to open at the end of the Pier.
The brochure, much like history itself, promises to be a growing document. New tales of the Pier's storied past are continually brought to the attention of the Pier Restoration Corporation. A version of the brochure written in Spanish is also currently in production.
"A Guide to Historic Santa Monica Pier" can be picked up at Santa Monica City Hall, Convention and Visitor's Bureau locations, and the Police Substation on the Pier. Brochures are also available through the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation office; call (310) 458-8901 or e-mail info@santamonicapier.org.
