The Stanton McDonald-Wright 38-paneled mural, specifically painted for the original Main Library, will be returned to the newly built Main Library, after being in storage for 30 years at the Smithsonian Institution.
The City was one of 13 recipients awarded a grant by the California Cultural and Historical Endowment to underwite the cost of conserving and installing the mural.
The mural was originally created in the reading room of the Library in 1935. It was the first federally funded mural projects to be completed in Southern California under the Public Works of Art Project. The City will provide matching funds.
