PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS,
the National Trust created Preservation Week in 1971 to spotlight grassroots preservation efforts around the country and it has grown into an annual celebration observed from small towns to big cities; and

WHEREAS,
Preservation Week 2004 was observed and celebrated nationwide between May 3rd and May 9th including at the Santa Monica Festival and throughout the month of May; and

WHEREAS,
the Preservation Week 2004 theme, "New Frontiers in Preservation," was chosen to recognize the challenges facing communities seeking to evaluate resources of the recent past, save older resources and integrate them into plans to revitalize our downtowns and neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS,
the City of Santa Monica has been recognized as a leader in local preservation, achieving an "A" on the LA Conservancy's first annual Preservation Report Card of 2003, progressively updating the Historic Resources Inventory and designating new Landmarks and continually striving to educate the community; and

WHEREAS,
the City of Santa Monica is fortunate to have outstanding resources for local historic research at our museums and libraries; and

WHEREAS,
historic preservation has been further strengthened in our community by the growth and activism of the Santa Monica Conservancy.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, RICHARD BLOOM, Mayor of the City of Santa Monica, on behalf of the Mayor and Members of the City Council, do hereby proclaim the month of May, 2004 to be

in the City of Santa Monica and encourage the Santa Monica community to gain awareness of and appreciation for the designated landmarks and other historic resources in our City.
