The Landmarks Commission will discuss the Marion Davies Estate, also known as Ocean House, built on Pacific Coast Highway in the 1920s by William Randolph Hearst.
The architect was Julia Morgan who also designed Hearst Castle. After its sale in the 1940s, it went through various beach club and hotel formations, which led to the demolition of the main house and the loss of much detail.
Located at 415 PCH, what still remains are a guesthouse, a pool, and some run down non-contributing structures. The original fence was standing until the 1994 earthquake. It was carefully documented before replacement.
Plans have already been drawn up for the restoration of the property by the City of Santa Monica. However, funds have not been forthcoming and what is left of it is decaying.
The City would like to demolish the non-contributing structures that remain on the property in order that they not cause further maintenance expense. At least one Landmarks Commissioner has said that as much of the original structures as is financially practical should be saved.
