Weekly walking tours of downtown Santa Monica and the highly regarded docent program at the Annenberg Community Beach House are organized and led by the Conservancy and its volunteers.
Our calendar provides information about the Conservancy and select preservation happenings in and around Santa Monica.
Walking Tours of Downtown Santa Monica are offered every Saturday. In approximately two hours and six blocks, the walk traverses more than 130 years of Santa Monica history, from its Wild West frontier beginnings to the sophisticated metropolis of today.
The Conservancy partners with the City of Santa Monica to provide free docent-led tours of both the new and historic portions of the Annenberg Community Beach House and Marion Davies Guest House – the 5-acre oceanfront site that was originally developed during the Gold Coast era of the 1920s by William Randolph Hearst for actress Marion Davies. Tours are offered through the week during the summer season and on a limited schedule during other months.
Building A Neighborhood is a unique program for third grade students as well as history buffs of all ages. Through lesson plans and interactive materials, students can study their own community and its origins and become invested in their hometown, leading them to be more engaged residents into adulthood.
A House on the Move is an activity guide for local schoolchildren that uses our “Moving Day” to help students think through the process of a house moving and changes in the local community. The activity booklet was created to teach children about historic preservation and sustainability. The guide describes the importance of the Shotgun House, how it will be moved, and how to prolong a structure’s lifespan through reuse.
